1st Grade

These “pre-grammar” years are focused on developing an excellent foundation in reading, writing, and math.  First graders get to take a trip down the Nile as they discover the ancient civilization of Egypt and the times of the Old Testament.  Age-appropriate and leveled reading takes place in K-2.

Memory Work:  Work While You Work – From McGuffey’s Primer, Christmas Bells – by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Above the Bright Blue Sky by Albert Midlane and The Months – by Sara Coleridge

Reading: Read aloud times in class, as well as at home; titles include: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, Little House in the Big Woods, The Railroad Children, The Great Wonder and King Tut’s Mummy.

Special Event: Ancient Egypt Fun Day

Writing: Handwriting without Tears (HWOT); Writing assignments focus on learning how to write descriptive pieces.

Math: Saxon 2

Science:  The study of science revolves around Life Sciences including; The World of Plants, The Human Body and The World of Animals.

History: The first year in the chronological study of history starts out with the Old Testament and Ancient Egypt.  Students study Genesis 1 and the Creation of the World through fall of Rome.

Art: Meet the Masters introduces us to famous artists around the world.  Each year we rotate 7 new artists including: Monet, Degas, Escher, Cezanne, Homer, Mondrian, Warhol, van Gogh.
