In the spring of 2007, parents around Albuquerque were rumbling about the need for a Christian classical school. At the time, there were no classical schools in the entire state of New Mexico. Those parents who were committed to give their children a classical education had to commit to full-time homeschooling to achieve their goal. The Lord brought together four moms who were drawn to the idea of starting a school and wanted to pursue it further. These moms met regularly to discuss and pray about what their dream school would look like. Those meetings were far from glamorous—most of them took place in a Burger King Playland. Out of those less-than-glamorous meetings emerged a unified mission and vision from those four founding moms resulting in Albuquerque’s first classical school: Oak Grove Classical Academy.
The vision was to create a passionately Christ-centered, distinctly classical and uniquely University-Model School. The process was sometimes daunting, painful, and slow. A turning point came in the fall of 2007. After about six months of planning, three of the four founders boarded a plane to visit a sister classical, UMS school in Austin, Texas called Veritas Academy. Their school was brimming with students and families who passionately testified of the great benefits of the partnership between home and school. The three founders come home with contagious enthusiasm and renewed commitment to bring their spouses “on board.”
Following the visit to Veritas, Oak Grove formally joined the National Association of University Model Schools® (NAUMS). Now, with all hands on deck, the planning and developmental stages moved into high gear. Through God’s grace, Oak Grove opened in August 2008 after a year and a half of planning.
Since then, the school has enjoyed steady growth in enrollment. In its inaugural year, Oak Grove had twenty-nine students in grades K-3; four years later, in 2011 almost 100 students in grades Pre-K-6. In the Spring of 2011, Oak Grove Classical Academy became a certified University-Model School® with NAUMS. The plans and vision of the Board of Directors is to add one grade level per year until we reach 12th grade in the 2017-2018 school year.
By God’s grace, we strive to make a difference now and in eternity pointing the hearts of our students to this truth, our motto; Initium Sapientae Timor Domini: The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord.
