The Grammar School years (Pre-K through 5th grade) are a time of delight and wonder as students explore and learn the world around them. That wonder and delight comes first in the form of letters as students learn to read and write. Learning to read and write opens up the world, as students experience the excitement that unfolds in the pages of history and great works of literary art.
The Grammar years in classical education focus on the foundational elements of learning. Just like learning to read starts with learning (and memorizing) your ABCs, the grammar years capitalize on this. Foundational concepts are memorized in order to provide the mental “pegs” for later study. Students at Oak Grove memorize great quantities of information, including; the parts of speech in jingle format, historical events in chronological order, poetry, Scripture, songs and Latin vocabulary, the books of the Bible, to name a few.
The University-Model allows teachers and parents to work side-by-side to the benefit of the student. The classroom teachers provide detailed lesson plans for parents to follow at home in the satellite classroom as well as provide those detailed plans so that parents are aware of everything that is being taught at school. This partnership provides top-notch academics, but more importantly, affirms the parent’s role as the primary influence in their child’s life. It enables parents to spend quality time to teach not only the mind but most importantly, to reach the heart of their children.
