Music

Music I-Kindergarten
Throughout the semester, students learn to identify the sounds and characteristics of various musical instruments, often through interactive demonstrations given by visiting musicians. Students also learn concepts of rhythm and keeping time in the context of a song. They participate in singing and making rhythm as a group, and they begin to identify musical note names, pitches, and musical genres. Students will also participate in the Christmas and End of the Year music programs.

Music II-1st-2nd Grade
Students in Music II spend more time learning the “language” of music through theory and and rhythm exercises and hands-on, interactive activities in correlation with the these concepts. A majority of the year is spent studying the lives and music of some modern and classical composers. Students will also participate in the Christmas and End of the Year music programs.

Music III-3rd-6th Grade
Students in Music III will prepare the students beginning recorder. We hone in on rhythm keeping, time signatures, recognizing notes on the staff, and being able to count/clap them in unison. We also work more on developing an understanding and recognition of the major scale through vocalization and listening so that we may apply it in the second semester. In the Spring, students learn to play the recorder and learn to play as a group. Students will work on a piece  (or a part of a piece) of music to “perform” for the class. Students also participate in the Christmas and End of the Year programs.
